The Golden triangle, Chiang Rai

The Golden Triangle is a region at the meeting point of three countries in South-East Asia: Thailand, Laos and Burma (Myanmar). It takes its name from the history of opium production in the area, which was once one of the largest poppy-growing regions in the world. The triangle is located in northern Thailand, near the banks of the Mekong and Ruak rivers.

Today, the area is primarily a tourist attraction. Visitors can discover picturesque landscapes, local markets and learn more about the region's history, including its links with the opium trade. The Golden Triangle is also a gateway to explore places like the Thai city of Chiang Saen, as well as boat trips on the Mekong River.

Although opium was an important industry in the past, the region has gradually evolved towards more sustainable activities, such as eco-tourism and alternative agriculture, after anti-drug efforts were put in place in the 1990s.
